On our last day in Minakami, we faced the cold mountain air and went for a hike. The sun was shining, but I was very happy to be wearing two sweaters, a coat and a scarf. The temperature difference with Tokyo was unbelievable. I had been saying for a good month that I was tired of the summer-like heat and craved cold, crisp air, so I could snuggle up under blankets with a knit sweater and drink hot coffee without it being too hot for hot coffee (Honestly, it could be 40 degrees outside, and I would still drink my coffee hot). This weekend in Japan’s breathtaking nature, away from the concrete, blue-light world, grounded me again. Caught up in the craziness of a hectic work schedule, I sometimes forget that I live in Japan, and that this gorgeousness is only an hour drive away. “Were it not for shadows, there would be no beauty,” as Tanizaki Junichirō wrote in ‘In Praise of Shadows’. ⚫️ Quite some time has passed since my last “breakfast” post. Except for on my stories I did not really see the point in posting on my feed, as I eat the same thing every single morning. For those interested, I can share the recipe later. Last Sunday morning, I woke up at the break of dawn, to find the sunlight not only beautifully illuminating the cozy wooden living room of the mountain house I was staying in, but also creating the most beautiful shadows. I must have sat quite a few minutes in silence at the breakfast table, just taking it in. It was quiet, no car sounds, just peaceful. Dreaming 🌲🏔 I feel like I woke up from a dream. A very, very, very good dream. ⛰🌲 From Saturday until Monday, Dion and I were so lucky to stay in a mountain house in Gunma. And when I say mountain, it’s litterally ón a mountain! Treetops were our only view. Though the autumn cold caught onto us in the heights of Gunma, we found ourselves bacoming the most calm we have been in months. We spent time together, we spent time by ourselves. We walked in the woods and soaked in onsen.
